Skills to cover in the shop

  • Removal of pedals (understand leverage)
  • Thread inspection and proper torque on installation
  • Removal of a chain with connecting rivet or master link
  • Correct sizing of a chain for a derailleur system
  • Installation of a chain; recognize chain wear and damage

Key procedures / notes

  • Pedals: use a proper pedal wrench (not a cone wrench); left pedal is reverse-threaded.
  • Chains: manufacturers design chain, cassette, derailleur, and shifter as a system — match width/spec.
  • Size chain correctly for the drivetrain; use master link or connecting rivet as appropriate.
